The Four Freshmen – Gulf Shores Winter Concert Series

Four highly talented vocalists with successful careers in their respective fields came together at a Northwest jazz festival and spontaneously formed an acclaimed quartet. Kirby Shaw is one of the country’s premier a cappella singers; Randy Crenshaw ranks among Los Angeles’ premier studio session musicians; Kirk Marcy directs Soundsation vocal jazz ensemble at Edmonds Community College in Seattle; Vijay Singh serves as composer, arranger, soloist and director for Central Washington University’s vocal jazz program in Ellensburg to complete this group

The Four Freshmen have long been one of the premier vocal groups in America, adding jazz-tinged flair to American songbooks since 1948. Drawing influence from barbershop quartets and Mel Torme’s Mel-Tones ensembles like barbershop quartets and Mel Torme’s Mel-Tones ensembles as well as traditional quartets like Barbershop Quartet of New Orleans (Barbershop Quartet of Philadelphia in England), their close harmony singing bridged the gap between traditional 1940s ensembles like Mel Torme’s Mel-Tones ensembles like Mel Torme’s Mel-Tones ensembles such as Mel Torme’s Mel-Tones ensembles to newer generation singers such as Beach Boys or Manhattan Transfer (see NYC Transfer for details).

Hal and Ross Barbour established The Four Freshmen at Butler University in Indianapolis under their original name of Hal’s Harmonizers; later changing it to The Four Freshmen. Their debut chart hit came with 1953’s Voices in Modern; by 1956 when their LP era concluded they had several moderate hits such as Mood Indigo, It Happened Once Before and Graduation Day which earned moderate airplay. Ken Errair of Redford Township Michigan replaced Kratzsch shortly thereafter until Ross Barbour died in 1977 followed by Don Barbour dying 13 months later due to a car accident; leaving Bob Flanigan as their sole original member from The Four Freshmen.
